Important People

Thomas Chute and William Mayberry - the First two settlers of New Marblehead in 1737.

Chief Polin -
The Native Americans were well established in Windham when the first settlers came.  These Native Americans probably were a band of the Saco River Natives, which were established near the Fryeburg, Maine area and referred to as the Pequawek Band.  In the Windham area, the Native Americans were led by the mighty chief, named Polin, mistakenly called Poland by the white settlers.  Polin was brave and clever.  The settlers thought him to be extremely cruel.

Stephen Manchester -
One of the earlier settlers in New Marblehead.  He was said to have been very courageous. On May 14, 1756 Stephen Manchester shot and killed Chief Polin in a battle between the settlers and Native Americans.  A granite slab on the Anderson Road marks the spot where Chief Polin was killed.
